Puerto Natales or Punta Arenas: which airport for Torres del Paine

Your traveler should fly into Puerto Natales. The lodges in Torres del Paine sit about 1 h 45 from its airport, and that short drive decides whether the first afternoon of the trip happens in the park or in a van.

Most travelers land in the wrong airport

Punta Arenas has many more flights, and it comes up first in any search. That makes it the obvious choice, and a costly one.

From Punta Arenas the drive to the park takes between 4 h 30 and 5 h. Put that on top of the rest of the journey: a 12 to 15 hour flight to Santiago, a connection, and another flight south. The van ride turns into an extra day of travel, and the road runs through flat steppe for most of the way. The scenery doesn't pay your traveler back for the hours.

Book the flight first

The flight to Puerto Natales is harder to secure than the lodge. There are only a few flights a day, and they fill in high season. Book the flight first and build the rest of the trip around it. If you book the lodge first and then hunt for a flight, you can end up a day off, with a night to fill in town.

The lodge pickup time picks your flight

Lodges collect guests at fixed pickup times, usually two a day, and you arrange them in advance. If your traveler lands after the last pickup, there is no transfer that day.

So you choose the flight by the pickup schedule. Price and convenient departure times come second. Pick the flight that lands a full hour before the pickup, because a one-hour delay in Patagonia is normal.

If nothing lines up, you have two options. Decide on one before you sell the trip:

• A night in Puerto Natales and an early drive into the park the next morning. It costs your traveler one night at the lodge.
• A private transfer outside the lodge schedule. It costs money, and someone has to arrange it ahead.

Either one works if you plan it, and either one becomes a problem if you discover it on arrival day.

When flights can't land in Puerto Natales

During 2026, several flights have failed to land in Puerto Natales, because of the runway's condition and the weather. It doesn't happen often. Have the response ready before it does:

1. Rebook your traveler to Punta Arenas that same day. Don't wait for tomorrow's Puerto Natales flight. Punta Arenas has plenty of seats.
2. Tell the lodge, so they move the pickup to match the arrival in Punta Arenas.
3. Your traveler reaches the park the same day, after the longer drive.

The lodges in this range tend to cover the longer transfer from Punta Arenas at no extra charge. Confirm it with each one when you book. The cost of changing the air ticket falls on whoever bought it.
