Four nights is the floor, and the first one is spent low. Three nights leaves two useful days, because arrival day can't include altitude.

How many nights in Atacama, and how to handle the altitude

Short answer

Four nights minimum. The main excursions, Valle de la Luna, the salt flat, the high lagoons, the Tatio geysers and the night sky, do not fit into fewer days without compressing them, and the first day has to stay low for altitude. Three nights leaves two useful days.

Plan four nights in San Pedro de Atacama, and treat the first one as arrival rather than as a day in the desert.

Why four is the floor

The main excursions are Valle de la Luna, the salt flat, the high lagoons, the Tatio geysers and the night sky. They do not fit into fewer days without compressing them, and several of them leave before dawn.

A three-night trip leaves a traveler exhausted instead of impressed. It also has a hidden subtraction: the first day cannot include altitude, so three nights becomes two useful days.

Altitude sets the order of the days

San Pedro sits at about 2,400 m, roughly 7,900 feet. Several of the excursions climb far higher, and the Tatio geysers are above 4,000 m, about 13,100 feet.

The first day stays low. Nothing high on arrival, in any circumstance. Acclimatization is gradual and cannot be accelerated, which makes the first day a fixed part of the plan rather than a wasted one.

If a traveler has a relevant medical condition, that needs to be known before the trip is sold, rather than discovered at the airport.

Where Atacama belongs in a longer trip

Atacama is the counterpoint to Patagonia. A trip with both shows the traveler two countries inside the same one, which is part of what makes Chile work as a destination.

Put Atacama after Patagonia. Arriving at altitude straight off a long-haul flight is harder than arriving once the traveler has already adjusted to the country and the time zone.

What does not work is both destinations inside one week. That is two domestic flights plus transfers at both ends, and the trip becomes a travel schedule with some desert in it.

The mistakes worth naming

Climbing to altitude on day one. The most common and the most serious.

Selling February or early March without warning about the rain. Closed roads can cost the geysers and the lagoons, which is half the trip. When to go, and when to avoid it.

Assuming desert means heat. The swing between day and night can reach 30 degrees, and nights are cold in every season.

Before any of this, there is the route in. How to get to San Pedro de Atacama.

Frequently asked questions

Are three nights enough in San Pedro de Atacama?

No. The first day has to stay at low altitude, so three nights leaves two useful days, and the main excursions do not fit. Plan four at the minimum.

How high is San Pedro de Atacama?

About 2,400 m, roughly 7,900 feet. Several excursions climb much higher: the Tatio geysers sit above 4,000 m, about 13,100 feet.

How do you avoid altitude sickness in Atacama?

Keep the first day low and let acclimatization happen gradually, since it cannot be accelerated. Any relevant medical condition should be known before the trip is sold, not at the airport.

Should Atacama come before or after Patagonia?

After. Arriving at altitude straight off a long-haul flight is harder than arriving once the traveler has adjusted to the country. Both destinations in one week does not fit.
